This will definitely be an elevation-based event. Temps will be a little too warm in the basin (Nashville-Murfreesboro-Franklin) for accumulation unless a squall passes through with heavy rates. Models do show temps right at freezing on the Highland Rim, so it's reasonable to expect minor accums. there.

The GFS has more precip below freezing for this event than for any other threat so far this winter for us. Sadly its still only 0.02" occurring with a 2M temp of 31.

Dang.  The 12z HRRR is stingy with the good stuff.

12z NAM3 looks very good for light accums for most.  Can really see how the Valley gets the shaft on the 6z NAM3 loop.

FOLLOWING
SUNSET TEMPS WILL BEGIN TO COOL RAPIDLY EVENTUALLY REACHING BELOW
FREEZING BY TOMORROW MORNING. SPEAKING OF FREEZING, HOW QUICKLY
THE COLD AIR ARRIVES TO MIDDLE TN OVERNIGHT PLAYS A LARGE FACTOR
IN SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS. CAMS CONTINUE TO BRING THE UPPER-LEVEL
LOW FURTHER SOUTH INTO THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY ALLOWING SOME
MOISTURE TO FLOW DOWN INTO MIDDLE TN THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT.

RIGHT NOW, IT APPEARS THAT 6 PM TO MIDNIGHT WILL BE THE WINDOW
WHERE WE BEGIN TO TRANSITION FROM A LIGHT RAIN, TO A MIX, AND
EVENTUALLY SNOW. MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE NEAR TO BELOW FREEZING
AFTER MIDNIGHT THROUGH THE EARLY MORNING HOURS, LEADING ME TO
BELIEVE THE PREDOMINATE PRCP TYPE WILL IN FACT BE SNOW. OROGRAPHIC
LIFT ALONG THE UPPER CUMBERLAND WILL HELP THOSE TO LIKELY SEE
HIGHER SNOWFALL AMOUNTS COMPARED TO THOSE WEST. RIGHT NOW, HIGHEST
SNOWFALL AMOUNTS APPEAR TO BE ALONG THE UPPER CUMBERLAND WITH
1-2" POSSIBLE. CAN'T RULE OUT A FEW LOCALIZED SPOTS REACHING
HIGHER AMOUNTS, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE IN OUR NORTHERN PLATEAU
COUNTIES.
FOR THIS REASON, DECIDED TO GO AHEAD AND ISSUE A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR THE AFOREMENTIONED COUNTIES. FOR THOSE WEST
OF THE UPPER CUMBERLAND, EXPECTING TOTAL SNOW AMOUNTS RANGING FROM
HALF AN INCH TO SOME LOCALIZED INCH AMOUNTS. HIGHER SNOWFALL
AMOUNTS ARE CERTAINLY POSSIBLE NEAR THE TN/KY BORDER IF THE COLD
AIR WERE TO ARRIVE EARLY ENOUGH IN THE EVENING.

Have to hope for one of those convective snow bands to pass through your area and lay down a nice coating. Light snow showers won't do anything with temperatures between 33-36F in the lower elevations.

There was a flash freeze in my area after the rain showers moved through early this morning. Temperatures dropped down to 30F and a light coating of ice was on vegetation.

Still some patches of snow left from last week.

That may be the upper level low swinging more southward.  OHX mentioned it this morning.

It is really diving south a lot more than east right now, could be beneficial to us, Time to radar watch/nowcast now imo

12Z model runs are coming in, and are showing pretty much the same
setup as previous runs. Did not adjust the forecast too much over
the next 36 hours. However, CAMs are showing potential for some
light rain/flurries moving through this afternoon especially for
the I-65 corridor and eastward to the Plateau. Adjusted pops
slightly to account for this. Other than that just updated near
term forecast to line up with obs trends. Rest of the forecast
remains on track.

looks little better jackson east... i guess i be up anyways, so lets see what happens

What is this snow thing ya'll are speaking of.  If it weren't for being in Nashville for Xmas eve and Xmas day then I wouldn't have seen any flakes so far.  Very rare we get shutout like this in NW TN.  Guess we have to pay our dues for usually fairing better than most places.

Showers are breaking out on radar- it is a convective sort of showery look to it. This is an interesting kind of system.

It will be interesting to see what areas get from snow bursts/squalls tonight.

The cold air is so deep and the surface air so shallow, the snowflake doesn't have a chance to melt 100% before it hits the ground.  We had a rogue 45F flizzard roll through Murfreesboro about an hour ago.

Quite the explosive growth of snow/rain showers over the area.  Cold air aloft along with sunshine causing the rapid expansion.

In terms of small hail, I would say yes.  Not sure what kind of process(es) go on in the hail/snow growth zone but I would think the absence of instability would lead to snow over hail.  I could be flat out wrong, though.

Been a pleasant January day here after morning rain.  Temps in the 40's, and the wind calmed down around lunch.

As sunset approaches, I can tell the colder air aloft is moving in by the large cumulus clouds developing southwestward toward the mountains.  Some have a spring-time thunderhead appearance.   It will be an interesting overnight weather event, but I doubt I stay up for it.   ::coffee::

Talking more the discrete convective snow showers where it is sunny one minute and blowing snow the next...then the sun pops back out. Seem to recall I usually see those more in late November or March.

For southern sliders to work out, you really need a cold air source - i.e. high pressure - back to the northwest, across the mid MS Valley.  In the 18z GFS's case, not in Montana.

Snowed real hard here in woodlawn for about 5 minutes and then stopped. Off and lighter snow at times. Most of the thicker bands are still back around the Cape and further back in central missouri. Lots of showery bands set up between middle tn back to the west and northwest in west ky and the boothill area. It will be fun monitor as the night goes on. ::popcorn:: ::snowman::

Woke up to a dusting with snow falling.  Much of it has melted, but snow has started to pick up again.  Occasionally, it comes down hard enough to reduce visibility briefly.  Radar shows some good returns around Knox, and northwest of there, heading this way.

While not the storm of the century, it does feel like mid-January outside.  Something that's been pretty rare the last few years.

I had just enough to get into the measurable category of just under a half-inch.  Just north of town, they had a heavy enough band to have got around 1 inch in places.  A difference of 5 miles at best.

This ended the longest snow streak on record for Paducah and Evansville as they got a few tenths of an inch of snow.  The last time prior to yesterday they haven't seen measurable snow since November 2019.

I did not know it had been so long for them.  With systems sliding by to our possible South, they stand a chance to make it up in the near term.

I measured 0.4" from this. Drop in the bucket, but at least it's something, right?

Some locations on the Plateau, such as in Cumerland Co., did well with this, measuring 3". You can check the snowfall reports here:
