Many of winter at this point have been in the below C category only to make a comebacks in late Feb or early March. Ie 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015. All of those winters plus last winter featured a March event which seem more common than other decades of winters. I remember on this forum Winter was deemed over after Feb 15th at one time. That seems to have been extended now as winter seems more February and early March focused. The March 4th-5th event of 2014-15 might be one of my top 5 favorite events, too.

As far as this past winter event, I spent about 90 hours consecutively below freezing with a moderate ice/sleet event. That alone tops those awful winters folks have already mentioned and definitely goes above and beyond the awful 1990’s. Even after 60+ and Sunny today, roofs still have sleet on them. Pretty remarkable.

For those of us in the Memphis area, even just last winter went above average for many of us with the March storm.  I realize that we did exceptionally well here in Collierville on that one but it still put us at an above average year for snowfall.

Also, I see a major stratospheric warming event that will essentially break up the polar vortex is forecast soon that could effect the end of the month.  As far as major snowstorms go, that is prime-time climo-wise.

Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the freezing rain

Snow up high
Won't you pour down over me
Yeah, I got some accretion
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

Just one of those weird Winters with multi-Month long SER dominance.. I guess beyond this there could be a Cold signal for last week Feb/early March... if we're on the wishcasting side of things. Mumble, mumble, SSWE. To me, this Winter has followed a 89-90 type of pattern, although the extreme Dec cold wasn't quite as pronounced.

This is just La Niña.  These often turn out really well in the western part of the state but rarely in the east (this weekend would be a real coup if it verifies).

Some memorable La Niñas winters around here:

1984-85
2007-08
2008-09
2010-11
2020-21

Fortunately- 2010/11 worked our well for virtually the entire board.

Unfortunately- one of the unlisted La Niñas was 2011/12 🤮

One other fun game to play is this:

Name a metropolitan area in the state.  Here are the Top 10:

1   Nashville   1,982,264
2   Memphis   1,324,926
3   Knoxville   869,046
4   Chattanooga   547,303
5   Kingsport-Bristol-Bristol(VA)   305,629
6   Clarksville   268,546
7   Johnson City   197,381
8   Morristown   137,612
9   Jackson   113,629
10   Cleveland

Now, for the all-time record snowfall, how many of the cities above have had their record occur in January or February?

How many have had their record storm in February?
In March?
Any other month?

There are 10 total.  Take your guesses and you should have 10.  Now, look them up.  You might be truly surprised.

The answers to these questions may shock some people.

Knox is in Feb 1960.. Tri Cities in November 1952... That's for the Eastern Valley Metros. Chattanooga, obviously was March 93.

Took a minute to find Cleveland, Tn record.. but it was also March 93, with 23 inches total. Their 2020 metro pop is 126,164, btw for those curious.. lol I mean, it's only 30 miles from Chattanooga, you'd think their Metro would just be included in Chattanooga's.. not just the Consolidated one.

If it cold enough in March, usually March systems have a lot more moisture to work with which is why most areas I predict will have their all-time biggest snowfall in March.

I would also bet a lot of Upper Midwest/Northern Plains locations have their biggest snowfall on record in April for that same reason.

I know Hopkinsville has its biggest snowfall on record in January, Paducah has it in December, but most other locations are in March (Bowling Green, Mayfield, Nashville, etc.)

Thing is...the variance is still just too great and the intangibles really have to come through for this to verify. I'm with you though...at least there's something to track in the middle of a relatively mild period.

12z Nam made huge move west. Will it continue tbd, lol. I would love a nice heavy snow with fat wet flakes. The ground would eat some up and it would melt fast afterwards as we dont really get cold but it would still be a nice end to winter.
