10 year Anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami

I know we have an active severe weather event to discuss at home, but has anyone else gotten sucked into the YouTube black hole of 2011 Japan Tsunami videos this week? It happens to me every year around this time. In 2011 pretty much everyone in Japan carried around a flip phone with an HD camera. As a result, video clips from this event are plentiful. To this day, many of them seem like they can’t be real. Straight out of a Roland Emmerich movie like “2012”. This year marked the 10 year anniversary of this terrible event. I’ve once again spent far too much time this week watching videos of the tsunami.

This one is probably my most watched video of the event. It’s from further away from the ocean than most others, but shows the incredible volume of water pushed into these valleys better than most others. I strongly recommend watching the entire thing:

I've seen multiple videos of that event, including a ship riding the first wave.  Living far inland all of my life, I can't imagine seeing something like that approach.  Despite our occasional bouts of severe storms here, I'd take that over a tsunami.  And most don't realize the coast of Oregon and Washington face a similar threat--perhaps in our lifetime.

After being into weather and earth science for most of my life and convincing myself I couldn't do it because of all the math, I went to the geology dept at UTC 2 different times to talk about a major change at the ripe old age of 26 right after this happened. I started in the fall of 2011 and graduated with a B.S. in Geology in spring of 2015. This event finally convinced me to pull the trigger and go for a career in earth science, which I am loosely working in now.
