I have a Dr appt in Baltimore in mid-Feb. Meeting up with some family and seeing some Washington DC sights while I'm there.

Gonna be cold. I grew up in Michigan & spent summers in TN (mom was from Chattanooga). But I have lived in TN for almost 30 years now, so not acclimated anymore.  ::cold::

Kind of off topic. Is there anyway to get up to Clingman’s Dome during the winter? If not, what is the highest point one can get
to around Gatlinburg with an 8-year old kid? (Meaning we aren’t hiking in the snow.)

Clingmans Dome (and the road) closes every year around December 1st, and reopens March/April.  Although the road is closed, you can walk the 7+ mies to the dome....but that's not feasible with an 8 year old.  So, the highest you can get is the Newfound Gap parking lot at the crest of the mountain.

That puts you at 5,049 feet.  Not too shabby.

NewFound Gap is the best you are going to do from a car right now. You can hike South to Clingmans, or North to Charlies Bunion. Both are great hikes in the winter if you have some micro spikes or other traction device for your boots.

*** Based off the latest 00Z Runs of the GFS and European, I am checking the F out and heading to Tahoe. Looking like a atmospheric river event could happen. GFS looks like a 2-3' storm, while the European is now really cranking it up along the Sierra Crest at 4-6 feet. Above 6K is gona get crushed, and I will be chillin in da cabin with my homies waiting for first lines. If ya wana come experience some crazy **** , lease be my guest and come with me.

Have to give you credit Nash wx, you are living the life.  Unfortunately, I'm about 15 years and four kids past my prime. No discretionary cash either. I'm daydreaming about weather chasing in retirement now. :) Nearly 15 years away from that as well.

Going skiing while you're up there? Also, don't be afraid to get some good video for us.

That is pretty much all I do Nov-April and when I can get to Chile , Argentina during the Summer. :) Winds have been absolutely insane , over 110mph....Trying to figure out if I want to come before or after this storm. Depends on winds and many other things.

Sounds like a rough life.  :)

Enjoy- and good luck digging out if you're trapped in the cabin.  ::snowman::

When you can align work up with travel and your hobbies, its awesome. Standard 8-5 would not allow this lifestyle. Everyone should push for remote work from your employers if its something that can work!

So it starts ~ Going to wait till this settles down. Traveling into the Sierras can be extremely difficult. Very concerned with Avy danger as winds are extremely high, and wind loads slopes will be very easy to trigger by man or naturally.

I imagine there is going to be some insane whiteout conditions for anybody who is participating in winter sports, snowshoeing, or hanging out in the Sierra Nevada.
