What's yall opinion on roads for area schools on Monday?  I think the sun has done s lot of melting and I hear roads are ok out this way.
It will take quite a bit to get all the back roads melted. This is where there will be huge difference between town and country. My guess is that most of mid Tn will be closed.

Lots of problems during the night last night and early this morning on some highways up this way. There were 8 State Troopers in a 3 mile stretch of HWY 78 in northern Dyer County this morning at 5 am. The windy conditions had blown snow out of the fields and there were drifts up to 2 ft deep across the highway. All the main roads had been cleared and it went from dry road to a 3 mile stretch of 2 ft of snow all at once. You could not see it until it was to late and cars were hitting it at normal highway speeds of 55 to 60. Needless to say it was a mess.

This was U.S. Hwy. 27 -- the primary state road through here -- in the middle of the afternoon, well after the snow had quit and after a full morning of TDOT plows working the roads. I told my kids they should take note of this because they might not see anything like it again until they're adults. Snows of this magnitude were not uncommon when I was a kid but we've had only a handful since then. '98, a couple in '10-'11, and this one.

Btw, snow flurries/showers continue here this evening and the roads that had been cleared are now snow-covered again. The storm that keeps on giving...

I'm a sucker for snow time lapse videos.  Glad someone did one for Nashville.

BNA's official total for the books is exactly 8", which ties for the 11th largest snowfall in the city's history of records. The tied year is 2/14/1902 and we just needed 1/10 an inch more to tie for the #10, which was 1/7/1988 at 8.1". This is the 2nd largest January snowfall on record for Nashville.

These amounts really do approach the top of the records.  There's not much separating #10 from #5.  A 9 inch snow would have approached a top 5 storm.

The top 3 were almost freak outlier events when the city got into the 15-17" range.

Travelers Advisory in effect for Middle TN this morning for black ice.  Many roads are quite treacherous.

The roads are melting fast. This morning there was a lot of black ice, but now everything is soaking wet.
