US Air Force drops WRF in favor of the UKMET
« on: April 20, 2015, 11:30:55 AM »
Apparently, the US Air Force will drop the WRF in favor of the UKMET for forecasting purposes.  Is the UKMET seriously that much better than the WRF?  If it was the Euro, I could easily see the change but the UKMET?   ::scratch::

Having been forecasting for the Navy 9 years and counting now, we use a myriad of different models, and unfortunately, the UKMET does better for us in global forecasting, not just US-specific. People have their panties in a wad over nothing.

Was hoping you would chime in.  Nice to get a perspective from someone with actual hands-on experience.

It's this whole "America elitist" bullcrap that has folks so up in arms, when it boils down. Seriously, we're not number 1 at most things, and weather models is another piece to it. It's something from nothing.

All great things must come to an end.

(didn't intend for thread derailment).  Carry on.

At least for the medium range, the UKMET's verification scores pretty consistently run near or just behind that of the ECMWF... and usually ahead of anything from North America (us or Canada).  I don't know why people have it in their heads that the UKMET isn't all that good, but it's usually a very reliable model.... much more so than some of our NCEP stuff.

Thanks for the input, Fred.  I was honestly curious how well the UKMET stacked up against the domestic stuff.
