Possible winter weather?
« on: November 27, 2007, 01:42:42 PM »
Has anybody seen or heard anything about possible winter weather in the 7-14 day timeframe?  There's some serious babble going on at several other forums concerning this.  Yeah, I know IT'S WAY TO EARLY to start looking at this, but who doesn't like a little weatherp0rn before Christmas?  :P :P ;D ;D :-X

I've been looking at all the models for that timeframe too. For us, I don't see any winter wx in the forecast, but I do see a potential to get some very cold air (departure from normal speaking) in here the first week of December. If anything, the models (very far out and flipfloppy right now to look at as accurate) paint a back end flurry on Tue/Wed next week and put us in the freezer for a few days. One thing is for sure, the cold is coming. First half of December looks to be below average temps for the Eastern half of the U.S.

GFS 12Z and 18Z are taming this next system. Still some cold air and strong cold front to move in, but temps won't be near as cold unless GFS flipflops again.

I saw some talk about this on another forum.  So, I had to check the ole model output to confirm it.  Last night's 0Z GFS is showing a 1050+ High centered over western Montana around December 11. That would be a pretty cold airmass.

Then, the freezer door would open for us somewhere around the December 12-14th timeframe.  Hackuweather this morning is showing 30s for highs and teens for lows around then. Also, it shows wintry precip possible on 12/14.  But, that's so far out, that it's hardly worth talking about at this point.  ;)

Anyway, the always erratic models could do a 180 on this and take it all away.  But, just thought I would mention it.   :P

Last night's model run already backed off on it.  So, there doesn't seem to be much to write home about on the way any time real soon.  Looks like some seasonal cool shots may give us some highs in the 40s next week.  But, it is December, after all.

I saw this morning where there might be enough moisture for a few flakes to fall, but nothing to write home about.  I haven't seen this morning's AFD.

The AFD seemed to imply that possibility for the Plateau (somehow, they were able to do it without using the S word, lol).
