2015: A Year in Review
« on: December 29, 2015, 03:21:21 PM »
2015 was a year that had a little bit of everything in it from major winter storms, a tornado outbreak, periods of extreme boredom, some warm to hot spots in the summer, and river flooding.  There were three major winter storms (President's Day, Feb 20th-21st, and March 4-5th).  The latter produced a swath of 12-15 inches of snow across portions of NW Tennessee and up to 23-24 inches in Ohio/Grayson counties in central Kentucky.  April through June for the interesting weather trackers was as fun as watching paint dry in this area.  No major severe weather events occurred in our spring season and it was extremely calm.  July brought an increased in severe weather with several weak tornadoes in the Davidson/Wilson County area on the 2nd, and major flooding on the 2nd-3rd.   This was followed by another round of heavy rain and severe mid-month for the plateau and Eastern TN.    August through November was another period devoid of anything interesting, but that changed in December.    December featured heavy rains impacting southeastern TN.   On December 23rd the biggest severe weather day occurred with a long track EF-4 tracking from northern Mississippi into SW TN, a deadly EF-2 in Perry County, and a strong EF-3 tracking across Wayne, Lawrence, and Maury counties doing extensive damage in Lutts(Wayne County).  More rain events triggered additional flooding along the Tennessee River and now as we celebrate New Years the Mississippi River will need to be watched.

2015 Stats:

- July and December were the two most active tornado producing months in the state.   Raise your hand if you predicted this then once you have your hand raised use it to play the lottery and win hundred's of million's of dollars.

- No High Risk Days in 2015 the first since 2000.

- The Warmest or Closest to the warmest December on record will occur.  Along with a Top 10 coldest February for many occurred in the same year.

- One of the strongest El Nino's on record occurred this year.

- We finally end the trend of record low tornado activity nation-wide this year, but still despite the active end to December, 2015 will still finish below average in tornadoes.

- Areas in the Cumberland Plateau were without power for 1 month during the Feb. 20th-21st Winter Storm.

Everyone have a great 2016 !!!!   ::bacon::  :D  ::yum::  ::guitar::  ::guitar::

The March 4-5th winter storm was one of the best forecast events I've seen in quite while. Models rarely waffled almost 7 days out regarding major winter precipitation.
