Hawaii Tropical Threats
« on: August 05, 2014, 12:52:44 PM »
Normally wouldn't start a tropical thread...but this is something of interest to watch in the coming days. The possibility of not one...but two...tropical systems to directly affect Hawaii. As best as records are available...two direct strikes in such a time would be unprecedented...and for that matter organized tropical systems surviving to Hawaii are relatively uncommon to begin with.

The first is Hurricane Iselle...beginning to weaken from peaking as a rare annular hurricane a couple of days ago...similar to Isabel in 2003. It will continue weakening...but current forecasts have it directly landfalling on the big island as a strong tropical storm by early Friday...

The second that will be on its heels is Julio...expected to become a hurricane in the next few days. Latest forecasts have it nearing the big island while maintaining hurricane status by Sunday...

NHC is making another rare move in scheduling recon flights into these storms as they approach. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center however will be taking over Iselle advisories later today which is standard protocol for any storm once crossing 140* longitude. The same would be expected for Julio later.

As mentioned...direct Hawaii threats are uncommon. If any remembers one from the past it is probably Iniki in 1992. Neither storm here should be nearly as destructive as that was but it will be a unique situation to monitor over the next week if the tropics interest you at all.

Hurricane Warning just issued for the Big Island (Hawaii County) as Iselle approaches and is maintaining hurricane strength longer than expected. First Hurricane Warnings in Hawaii since 1993. Tropical storm watches/warnings for most of the rest of the state.
