GR3 Placefiles and Color Palettes
« on: June 29, 2014, 01:17:28 PM »
Not sure if we have a "true" repository for GR placefiles/color palettes so I wanted to just share these two websites...

www.wilmingtonwx.com and almanydesigns.com

At wilimingtonwx.com, there is an actual SPS placefile that I was able to play with quite a bit.  It's pretty neat, and customizable to an extent (color and line thickness).  Changing the color was kind of tricky and I had to utilize a RGB table to get the three color values.  The default color is a beige and the URL stream looks like this:

http://wilmingtonwx.com/NWS_Special_Weather_Statements.php?color=&width=

On the wilmingtonwx.com site, you have a "customize" button for the SPS placefile.  Under that, you have an area where you can enter the RGB code in rrr, ggg, bbb format.  The code for white is 255,255,255 and the URL looks like this:

http://wilmingtonwx.com/NWS_Special_Weather_Statements.php?color=255%2C255%2C255&width=

Notice where the "255s" are.  You can simply delete those values and input your own RGB values for whatever color you need.  My first true SPS test was with a blue and the URL for that was:

http://wilmingtonwx.com/NWS_Special_Weather_Statements.php?color=028%2C047%2C186&width=

One thing to keep in mind is that while you can choose ANY RGB code you want, the values MUST be input in the URL stream in three-digit format.

Below is a screenshot with the SPS placefile activated (the #tspotter group has chosen to go with a white outline) and a "Phased Array" BR color palette.

Almanydesigns.com has a MULTITUDE of different color palettes to choose from.  Not sure if they're compatible with GR2, though.

I've created a few of my own color tables, including a BV and SRV table in MPH with a change in color once severe limits are reached. I'd be more than happy to share it if anyone wants it.

How about you?

Seems to work OK for me.  I get the outline shortly after it's issued.  Only complaint is that it doesn't go away as the SPS expires.  There's typically about a 5-10min delay.

How do I set a "Home" spot?  I can't for the life of me figure this out.   ::scratch::

Got to be done via placefile.  Use Notepad and this format:

Title:

Font: (you can change fonts and sizes)

Subtitle:

Threshold: (sets when the "location" appears on the screen...i.e. zoom setting)

Text: latitude, longitude,1,"Text you want displayed"

Here's a sample of one of my local placefiles that was built a few years ago:

Here's a link to the GR page for building a placefile...

http://www.grlevelx.com/manuals/gis/files_places.htm

Once you're finished, save the file either on your desktop or in your GR folder.  Upload the file via Placefile Manager inside GR.  You can also affix an icon to the location, but that escapes me at the moment.  Let me know if you need anything!

Don't know exactly what you are trying to do, whether it is set custom locations (which Eric has laid out above), or mark your house on the map...but if you are trying to mark your house, you can zoom into it, right click, and click "Set Home Location". It then places a yellow marker where your house is.

Or you could just do that.   ;D

Hopefully someone can help me here. I recently signed up for Analyst and I was very excited to watch storms today. The only problem is that the radar data is not streaming. I have put in the Iowa State code numerous times only to get this "Error downloading grlevel2.cfg" so I really do not know what to do. Someone help me please!!
AND A LOT CAN CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND THEN.

Sorry Adam...I saw your texts but I was at work last night and couldn't respond.  Try this:

http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/data/nexrd2/raw

Try this if that doesn't work:

http://mesonet-nexrad.agron.iastate.edu/level2/raw/

If still unsuccessful, join the GRLevelX User group on Facebook.  I'm sure someone there can help.
