StormChaseTN's Weather Alert System
« on: April 03, 2014, 08:05:40 PM »
Hello all,

For the last few months, we have been working on a system that will alert you the second a warning is issued for a particular county in Tennessee. We are just about finished and ready to release it to the public, but we'd like some people to test it out and let us know how it works. This system will send you an email, text message, or both in the event an alert is issued for your county. This system is completely free.

If you sign up, you will receive alerts for the following bulletins:
Tornado Warning
Tornado Watch
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Flash Flood Warning
Flash Flood Watch
Flood Warning
Flood Watch
High Wind Warning
Winter Storm Warning
Winter Storm Watch

You can sign up here: http://stormchasetn.com/mobile-weather-alerts/

Thanks in advance! As the warnings roll in tonight, be sure to post below what you think and any suggestions you may have.

I received the alert for the Tornado Watch about 3 minutes after it was issued for Davidson county.

I signed up as well. I got a text for the tornado watch as soon as it went out. But then got another text about every hour that said the same thing. Also got the SVR for Shelby, but it was 3 or 4 mins after it came out. Good service though Trevor. With a few minor fixes, it will be great.

TL;DR My name is Ryan and I designed this system.

The server that runs this is setup in 2 parts. One is the NWS importer that fills the database, that runs every 10 seconds. The next is the actual email sending script. That is set to run every 5 minutes for a lot of reasons like to prevent email flooding, not make the server look suspicious in the future sending out a high mail volume and to space out the receiving of emails or texts.

The reason why some alerts come faster than others is because of NWS pushing the alert out just before the 5 minute increment where the email script would run again. (It's basically luck of the draw.)

The explanation of why you got duplicate alerts is because:

NWS kept changing the times and the messages, which would change the hash of the content in an alert that the NWS importer script makes so the script treats it as a new alert. (The system doesn't know any better basically.)

If you have any questions, please let me know here or at my email Ryan@RKHTech.org

Thanks,

-Ryan

Is there a way to unsubscribe to the service?  I didn't try it out because it appeared there may not be, since all it requires is your mobile number.

Currently there is not, but I can take someone out manually in the database until I have that written.

It works with regular email or a cell phone.

I just fixed the glitch involving repeating alerts and by request of Charlie to have the email script run every minute instead of 5.

The unsubscribing is almost done, I'm waiting on Charlie to do a couple of things and then I can polish it up.
