NWS Redesign...
« on: August 15, 2011, 10:26:18 AM »
NWS is looking to redesign their website.  More details here:

http://www.weather.gov/redesign/

I personally think it's way past time for a refresh, but I'm not sure that they can make their site more user friendly than it already is.  Take a look and see what you think.

I'm perfectly ok with the current site, that appears to have been developed with basic html on angelfire or geocities.

LOL...well it has been about 10 years. The current NWS template was designed in late 2001 and implemented across the various sites in 2002.

Time for a change...no doubt.

Yep, but you know there will be the crowd that resists it with all their being though because its different from what they are use to.  I can hear the complaints already!

There will be some, but I went to a weather conference last fall where we were actually told that the NOAA website was ranked as the least user-friendly gov't operated site across the country...so maybe we are actually seeing a change the majority of people want?

But yes, there will be a few who don't like it...can't please everyone. If Jesus couldn't do it, then we sure as heck won't be able to! (My motto to life)

You can be sure of that...

I can remember the pre-standardization websites though. The design...as badly as it needs overhaul now...was a big step up for most WFOs at the time. You could tell there weren't many skilled web folks in the NWS at that time! (which isn't the case now...a bit unfortunate now we see the standardization...probably could get some nice unique sites).

The NWS's website was outdated when it was launched. So it makes sense that their new website will be outdated when it's launched.  ;D

As long as it is functional, I don't necessarily care how aesthetically pleasing it is, though.

I wonder if they have done any infrastructure upgrades behind the scenes, or if they plan too.  I know the NWS's site slows to a crawl during big events in the past.

I didn't really see that much difference between that and what is there now.

I'd be happy if MRX added all the graphics and things that you get from the other WFO in the state on their main page.

John, I agree MRX is so behind.  I feel like BMX has the best set up. Especially with the multimedia report. I would like to see some kind of upgrade site wide!

I'm not sure it's any more useful than the homepage image that was included in the story Toasty linked above, but here's a preview of sorts for the new NWS site...

http://preview.weather.gov/

Ironically, the NWS's current website was launched in 2002, and this new website looks like it was built in 2002.  ;D

I might recommend that everyone use the comments link at the top of the site to have their voices heard.  When in Request for Comment mode (like it is now), it's pretty much the only chance you will get to possibly influence changes to the site design.
