Have been super busy the last 24 hours dealing with leftovers from this event at my house in Sevier Co. It sits at the top of a 2400 ft ridge and was the victim of the nasty mountain wave from Tues night. I lost half the roof and had a collapsed deck. Have never dealt with a disaster before and well..its a good thing we have insurance. Roof repairman estimates winds reaching 100mph to do this kind of damage. Havent really had any time to pay any attention to any systems, but will look later. Never throught this storm would effect me in this way.

NWS Morristown has been most helpful in their explanation to me for insurance sakes:

Wow Curt...sure hate to hear that. Glad to hear though it should all be insured and assuming nobody was there at the time either. Good luck to you in getting the repairs done.

Thanks fellas. So far, insurance has been great to deal with. There was no water damage on the inside for which I am most grateful. I have really dealved into the mountain wave concept today with insurance. It is a most interesting phenomenon that can affect much of the western foothills in Sevier, Cocke, and Greene counties.

Here is a pic from a few months ago. While rare, it has happened before and am now afraid will happen again. Can you say increase in premiums??

AND there was no one inside either. If so the renters would probably have never returned.

Nice!  I know where the TN weather retreat will be at.  ;D
Best of luck in the repairs, on the bright side you get a new roof!

Sorry about the damage you had.  Glad that you have insurance.  Accu-W had a Wind gust in Gatlinburg of 78 mph, I am sure there were probably higher ones.  Used to live Etowah TN, and we had the Mountain wave wind event one weekend.  Scary, the winds were just Howling, I mean down right scary stuff.  We had to go to the nursing home we were working at because several pines had fallen on to the roof.  So yeah, scary stuff.  Glad all is ok. :)

So Curt, why no camping out for winter wx in the mountains? Looks like a good spot for snow chasing to me.

Curt,

Glad no one was hurt. Best of luck to you with the repairs and hopefully you can avoid any future damage with mountain waves.

That is a good example of why I am so interested in mountain waves. The wind gusts that I have experienced in some of the mountain wave events are much stronger than any I’ve experienced in severe thunderstorms. This recent event actually wasn’t that strong compared to past events, but the highest gust at Camp Creek still reached 78mph. During the November 2010 mountain wave event, the maximum gust was 90mph at Camp Creek(only around 1500ft in elevation). I’m sure the wind has gusted over 100mph several times in areas of southern Greene County during the extreme events.

Well rentals are paying the bills all winter, so no camping out :)  I will be there in 2 weeks, though and honestly am praying for a huge warm up so I can bike Tsali Rec Trails in NC and hike LeConte.

And yes, let's hope for future avoidance. Am planning some major structural changes as we speak.

You rent this out?  Nice!  I might hit you up at some point.  I just love nice places in the mountains.

The interesting aspect of these mountain wave events is how localized they are.  I live at about 1200ft in Sevier county, in a hilly area near Douglas lake.  I was driving in one part of Sevier county at about the same elelvation I'm at during this event, and winds were gusting so bad I could hardly keep my truck on the road.  I drove an additional 8 miles to my house, and there was barely a breeze.  I didn't start seeing higher winds at my place until the front/rain began to push in.  It seems we have these wave events about 2-3 times each winter and their strength depends on the strength and track of the low pressure.  Of course, this one was caused by the powerhouse low that bombed out to our west and north...a perfect track for a mtn wave event.

Hey, I think I've seen that place in my travels around the country.  Hope your repairs are swift and not too costly on your premiums.

Holy crap, dude...I totally missed this.  Glad everything is coming together for you.  Mountain waves are no joke.  My Aviation Wx professor used to fly in and out of Alaska, and one of his buddies ran into a mountain wave.  The way he tells it, the plane's velocity jumped "instantly" from about 200kts to well over 300kts.  It sheared the wings right off and "he piled it in".  Definitely scary stuff.
