Christmas Storm 2010
« on: November 07, 2010, 07:56:10 AM »
I know this is waaaaaayyyyy early to be talking about and that the chances of seeing snow on Christmas are purely guesswork at this point BUT what are our chances of seeing it? Its the cold air making me think this way for sure...

We saw snow last year on Christmas day, when it was about 70 on christmas eve. Of course none of that accumulated but it just goes to show that we can have some flurries on Christmas.
AND A LOT CAN CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND THEN.

Just to put things in perspective....Temps after the Great Apps Storm of 1950 which featured T-giving snow and below zero temps, were in the 70's a few days later and in the 60's on Christmas. So no way can you start to make guesses based on early snow or cold. Revive the thread on December 20th and we'll talk. ;)

Our chances statistically are not real good.

These maps show the probability of having at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas morning.

I'm not real big on analogs and statistics though ::bagoverhead::

Exactly, statistics dont mean a thing thing when you have a big triple phaser coming up giving us some snow. ::rofl::

In my lifetime, we've had flurries once, accumulating sleet once, and ice twice (two years in a row) and I'm only 22. The odds of seeing something wintry aren't all that bad considering where we live, but the odds of a white christmas are very slim. The last one in Chattanooga was in 1969 I believe, when it snowed 6 inches on Christmas Eve. My mom has told me stories about it before.

In a La Nina year, somewhat like this winter, but not quite more than likely, there was a Ice Storm on Dec 23rd-24th 1998 in Mid TN.  Which left many people without power for Christmas.

You had the Western Kentucky Dream on Dec. 23rd-24th 2004, along with a really cold and white Christmas for Kentucky, good portions of Arkansas and Tennessee, and even a little bit of Northwest Mississippi.

December 1990 also featured some snow around Christmas.  That is all for what I call the modern day's or from Mid 80's to present.  A few trace amounts in and around Christmas on a few other years.

We need some rain around here.

White Christmas' in my lifetime, defined as at least an inch of snow/ice in the ground is 1998 and 2004. I believe 1990 came mighty close, too with snow on Christmas day. KMEM had 2 white Christmas' in the 60's, 1962 with 2 inches left on the ground and 1963 with 14 inches on the ground. Maybe 1966 had some too? I need to check. About 4 inches fell on Christmas day in the 20s sometime.

1999 was our last white Christmas here on the northern Plateau, if I'm not mistaken. I don't recall exactly how much snow we got that year but I remember the secondary roads being slicker'n snot on Christmas morning. We've had snow since then on Christmas but no accumulation.

I think we've had one in the 2000s. We had maybe 2 or 3 in the 1980s from snow being on the ground or falling on Christmas day and a couple in the 1990s.

Proof that it can, indeed, happen.
