Weather Channel Local Forecast Emulator
« on: March 20, 2010, 10:54:28 PM »
Has anyone ever downloaded/tried the Weather Channel "WeatherStar 4000" Emulator Program? For those unaware..."WeatherStar" is the system sent to various cable outlets across the country that allows the Weather Channel's local forecast to be viewed for various cities. The "4000" version was the one mainly used in the 90s...and featured a blue/orange color scheme.

Somebody several years ago developed an emulator program that mimicks...very well I might say...the WeatherStar 4000 system. Much of the features truly available in it at the time are included and can be customized for about any location in the US. A few notable differences not featured are weather warning scrolls and a true-to-life radar image (the current version exports the default NWS Radar images)...but a new version is upcoming with those features added...which will make it a near perfect-copy of the actual system.

Anyway...I thought I'd see if anybody else was interested or perhaps has used the program. Really cool for weather nerds like me!  :D

Here's the link to where you can find out more and download it...

And...here's a video I just uploaded onto YouTube with the actual emulation running earlier tonight (3/20) for Memphis...I did the best I could to replicate the actual way it was set-up in the 90s...though I couldn't remember all the details.

Oh, geeze.  Childhood memories.  It even comes with the easy-listening jazz.

I'm definitely getting this.

LOL. The music you do have to add yourself...so you could add the typical TWC easy listening...or you could add something from your own collection. There are sites out there with TWC music playlists and audio clips to download for use...that's where I got mine.

Here are a couple of more I just made...

One from Memphis...

The Other from Tupelo MS where they're getting something interesting right now to display off ;)

Got this to work under win7, and I must say, it's a fun little tool.  Thinking about setting this up as a SSTV application with my callsign as the logo, and no music.  We'll see... ;)

It took me a while, but I got it running once I got all the ASOS codes and zone numbers. This is really nice.

Looks like a great program. I'm having problems loading it. I tried on Firefox with no luck then tried on Windows with no luck. Here is a shot of the error I keep getting. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

You can also go to weatherdaddy.us, which is a Web version of the WeatherStar 4000. When you enter a city, it will show you the ASOS code and zone number for it.

Do you have the Microsoft.NET 1.1 version? You have to have the 1.1 version...later versions aren't compatible. That's usually the main issue with problems...if not maybe try making a post on their support forum.

I installed the NET 1.1 and still have the same problem.  Eventually I uninstalled the 4000 Emulator, cleared out all cookies from Firefox and Internet Explorer. I thought maybe I had issues with my COMODO firewall and even turned it off while I tried installing it with no luck.

As for their support forum, I tried to open an account there. I swear to God, the CAPTCHA is impossible to read. My main computer is hooked up to the 47" in my den and even using zoom to the max I couldn't figure out the jumbled mess they want you to type into the box. I gave up after about 15 attempts. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.

I absolutely HATE Captcha's.... The reason they have those is so Computers can't access the sites. BUT in my opinion, a Computer could access the site easier than a human could.
