Snow possible 1st part of December?
« on: November 28, 2009, 10:05:20 AM »
I thought I would start a topic away from the general winter discussion about the upcoming storm this week, which will bring mostly rain and maybe some snow flakes on the tail end? The 12z GFS was a complete reversal of 0z, and shifted the storm much further NW, so....if this were true would not be so sure to see any flakes. Time will tell and at least its fun that we are in snow discussion mode!

EDIT It certainly looks as if this one will be a pattern changer though with the coldest air of the season coming by week's end. Perhaps it can stick around for awhile, too!

Yep...both the 11/28 0Z Euro and 12Z GFS have shifted the track of the low to the west, now over middle or west TN. My guess is we get about half an inch of rain followed by some wrap around light snow showers or flurries. Then it turns cold for several days. Highs during the day Thursday and Friday progged at 34 and 37, respectively.

From reading this morning's AFD out of Old Hickory...maybe I am looking too much into it, but from my point of view what I find interesting is that they say a rain/snow mix is likely and that no significant accumulations are expected "at the moment".

They said no significant accumulations are currently expected, but are minor accumulations possible?

Just food of thought for you. ;) :)

Track of the low is most of the equation, but so is the cold air source on the NW side. Right now it doesnt look like a big deal snow-wise unless some things change, which it could. The cold air really doesnt appear to filter in until the deep mositure is gone. However, any snow at this early in the game is more a novelty than a sure bet. Just seeing a few flakes before Christmas is mood altering for me!

BTW- always interesting to see winter storm watches for El Paso TX area. Moderate to strong El Nino's are kind to this region in the snow dept.

OHX has my area in for Wednesday night...a 60% chance of rain/snow. Low will only get down to 35F they say so no problems look to occur from this event. But snow before Christmas is nice to see and I hope this is system "opens up the floodgates" for the cold, arctic air.

I hope we get a surprise coating of a few wet inches. I have two finals on Thursday that I could use a couple of extra study days for. I'm not holding my breath though. Right now my forecast is for a miserable night. 80% chance of rain, low of 35. Tennessee winter weather at its most miserable.

11/29 12Z GFS is colder and wetter showing ~1.4 inches of rain and max 2m daytime temps of 33 and 32 Thursday and Friday respectively. It also shows 0.4 inches of snow and the low tracking over east TN. The 11/29 0Z Euro shows the low more strung out passing over middle-east TN and is also very wet but has the cold arriving later with maybe a few flurries at the end. The Euro is also pretty cold until at least 12/7.

The upcoming snow will probably melt upon contact with the ground.  :P
