This is going to be a big winter
« on: October 21, 2009, 03:24:41 PM »
For a number of reasons.

1. The weakest argument is that we are way overdue but it's true.

2.  Weakened Sun Spot activity.  I did alot of research on sun spots in college and I came away convinced they play a large role in our weather patterns.  I feel like the science is there but others have won out that it doesn't belong.

3.  The past summer was one of the cooler summers in the last 15-20 years.  I would be willing to bet we see a continuation of that pattern.

4.  Accuweather says so! lol,

I would agree with your hypothesis, except for reason #4...  ::guitar:: ::whistling:: >:D

You could add west based El Nino as a reason for the hypothesis to for  ::bacon::

I get excited about every winter. Usually this leads to massive disappointment :(, anger ::blowup::, and sadness :'(, but I do it every year nonetheless. I have exceptionally good feelings about this winter, and, by the law of averages, eventually we will have to have another big snowstorm here (if this winter goes badly, it will be the 16th consecutive winter without a major 6"+ storm here). It seems that the stars are somewhat lined up for us this winter, but, as we all know too well, frozen events in this area are always borderline, and somebody always gets left out. Hope it isn't me again this winter. . . .

FWIW, Accuweather has predicted active winters in the Eastern US and failed the past couple years.

I by no means am a fan of accuweather but they are not the only ones. Over the past several years many have busted pretty bad. Things have not acted in the "norm" and we constantly changing. This year I feel that most have a higher confidence level in forecasting this winter. One thing that I do not know if anyone has commented on is this. Endless amounts of dry NW flow leading to a suppressed pattern?I feel there will be some H500 Lows this winter that are going to impact the area along with 1 or 2 events that drop in from a higher latitude than Nashville. The smokies are going to be the hot zone!

Those of you who peruse the easternwx forums should check out foothillsnc's winter forecast (he is a MET, not just a weenie like me). Needless to say there is  ::bacon:: to be had if he's right.

foothillnc winter forecast excerpt :
Quote
I'm most confident in the cold and snow along the Apps from central and western Pa, western Maryland down to the northwest NC, and again across the lower Miss. Valley and Tennesee Valley in seeing much more than usual snow and ice.

Wouldn't an El Nino prevent this from happening too often?

BTW, foothills maps and forecast for the winter are SWEET!

I think there are a lot of signs pointing towards a memorable winter. But a lot of folks seem to be favoring the idea of a suppressed storm track. If this is the case, there's a good chance we'll be enjoying cold and dry weather while folks from Birmingham to Atlanta are "stealing our snow."  ;D

Cold without snow = FAIL.

Minnesota winter was "mild" last year apparently, and yet I've never seen so much snow in my life.  I should have imported you all to help with the shoveling.

Not sure how much help I'd a been.  It's hard to find a shovel that'll fit my hands.
