check out this picture:it was taken across the street from the NWS in paducah after the storm was over. those trees look absolutely tortured.
That picture reminds me of Macon CO last Feb when the tornado went through here. We were without power for 3 days I still can't reach my friend in Paducah. I only have her cell phone number. I am sure it will be days before I actually get to talk to her.
Ice storm leaves grave situation in Grayson CountyPosted: Jan 29, 2009 10:19 PM CST By Scott Harvey - bio | email Posted by Charles Gazaway - emailLEITCHFIELD, KY (WAVE) - While many of us in Kentuckiana have been hit hard by this winter storm, you may not believe what some Kentuckians are going through. WAVE 3 went to Grayson County where 95% of all residents and business are without power. They are begging for any help they can get. Emergency Management officials say if help doesn't come soon, people's lives will be in extreme danger. The entire town of Leitchfield is dark. "It's like a war zone," said Randall Smith, Emergency Management director.Even the Grayson County Emergency Management Center is running on generators. Smith says they are making it, but barely."I can't reinforce it enough. We need volunteers to come to Grayson County," said Smith.Out of the 24,000 residents, 22,800 are still without power three days after the storm hit. There is only one operating gas station. Mike Newton is one of the few volunteers there. Thursday, he spent more than 10 hours helping direct a line of cars in and out of the gas station. "This is the worst I've ever seen," Newton said about the county's condition. One family filling their car and several gas cans said they waited nearly three hours. It was either that or drive 30 miles to Elizabethtown or even further to Bowling Green.Smith says the county's biggest need is for supplies and medical volunteers, like nurses and other medical staff. "It is getting critical at this point now," said Smith. "It is getting very critical."Smith told WAVE 3 that although the county has been begging for help, they have yet to see one person from the American Red Cross come to their aid. If some help doesn't come soon, Smith fears the worst."I'm totally disappointed in some of the organizations that haven't stepped up and helped us here and we have called numerous times," Smith said. "We will probably have some fatalities from this, because we have people on the lakes that we can't even cut into to go and get." Smith says there are so many things they are unable to do themselves."We need chainsaws. We need manpower. We just need help," said Smith.Grayson County High School and Clarkson Elementary School are being used as shelters. They too are running on generators. 911 lines are working and Grayson County officials say they can provide transportation to the shelters.
There is word now that some residents of rural western KY may not get their power back for 20-31 days.
My brother lives in this county. My parents have property there too.
