Dangerous Cold This Week
« on: January 13, 2009, 02:14:52 PM »
Looks like some dangerous cold weather is headed our way for this week. I thought we could discuss the extremely cold temperatures here. Huntsville is saying wind chill values possibly going below freezing with low actual temps in the single digits.  ::cold::

Good to start this thread. Thanks snowman.  Looking over data currently we are going to be pretty dry with the next clipper that comes through. Given models due spit out a bit of QPF we have seen what happen with this one already and most likely should be limited. Of course areas NE of Nashville have a 50% chance I would say at seeing snow showers with Little or No accumulation. Overall Temperatures have been lowered here in the area. Thursday High 22F  ,Low 2F, which means that outlying areas are going to drop to below 0

2 is too low for Urban Nashville IMO. BNA deviated 3 degrees cooler than MOS's forecast of 5º. Watch those colder valleys too. I agree Nashvillewx they may flurt with 0º or lower.  :o

The MEG/OHX grids for Thursday Night/Friday Morning are downright brutal...with many locations in the lower to middle single digits. More urban areas may manage middle to upper single digits...while sheltered locations could go close to zero. The only area not likely to see single digits is the Memphis Metro...where temperatures will likely hold to between 10 and 13.

MAV MOS had a low of 1 degree for MKL (Jackson) on the 12z run. While that was one of the colder outliers among ensemble members, the current forecast still calls for 3.

If there was as significant snow cover to our Northwest as we saw this past December during the last cold spell, and of course were there any over TN, many areas would likely drop below zero in this cold spell.

...VERY COLD AIR HEADED FOR THE MIDSTATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT...
INCREASINGLY COLDER TEMPERATURES WILL BE THE RULE FOR THIS AREA
AT LEAST THROUGH FRIDAY. A STRONG ARCTIC AIRMASS IS HEADED FOR THE
TENNESSEE VALLEY WEDNESDAY NIGHT. AS THE ARCTIC FRONT PASSES
WEDNESDAY NIGHT...SHOCKINGLY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL INVADE THE
MIDSTATE. HIGH TEMPERATURES ON THURSDAY WILL ONLY BE IN THE
TWENTIES WITH STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS AT 10 TO 20 MPH. THIS WILL
PRODUCE WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES NEAR OR JUST ABOVE ZERO DEGREES.
WINDS WILL DROP DOWN TO 5 TO 10 MPH THURSDAY NIGHT JUST AS THE
CORE OF THE COLD AIR ARRIVES. LOWS THURSDAY NIGHT WILL BE BETWEEN
ZERO AND 5 DEGREES. WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM MINUS
10 TO ZERO DEGREES. TEMPERATURES WILL RECOVER SLOWLY...BUT WE
SHOULD REACH THE UPPER 30S FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. THUS WE COULD
BE BELOW FREEZING FROM WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

RESIDENT SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS AFTER THE FRONT PASSES TO GUARD AGAINST
VERY COLD WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES. LIMITING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND
DRESSING WARMLY WILL BE THE RULE. REMEMBER TO KEEP PETS INDOORS AS
MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND TO CHECK ON THE ELDERLY TO MAKE SURE THEY
HAVE ADEQUATE HEATING.

Well, the long-range models a while back were at least right about the cold... getting near 0 as they depicted.  This will be the coldest we've seen in several years, I believe.

Yep. I'm happy about that.
