Lets talk spring.... maybe winter will get jealous......
« on: February 22, 2008, 11:31:42 PM »
So what is everyone planning on planting in their gardens? Maybe if we think spring - winter will get jealous and give us a small taste befor it is all over…..

We are planning on putting in a strawberry patch this year. And also planting some fruit trees - dwarf size. I pray we have a wet summer so all my money doesn’t shrivel up in the sun….

I also hope to see some interesting weather this spring. We deserve it after this up and down winter

That’s what troubles me. This notion that we have to take sides in this country now, you’re either with us or against us, Republican or Democrat, red state or blue state. No one looks at an issue and struggles over the right position to take anymore. And yet, our ability to reason is what makes us human. Lately, we seem so willing to forfeit that gift of reason in exchange for the good feeling of belonging to a group. We all just take the position of our team.”

Yummm!  We have some strawberries that need to be moved to get better sunlight.  Do eventually want to get a couple of apple trees as well.

Last year we had our FIRST real grown-up garden that was fun, despite the drought.  I did A LOT of canning.  This year, we plan to expand it a bit.

I really LOVE gardening, though I do have to do much of my work EARLY in the morning or in the late evening.  Cannot get out in the heat of the day much.

I planted a bunch of tomato and pepper seeds last Sunday while watching the Daytona 500.  When I checked them yesterday they still had not germinated yet.

Last year I kept at least a couple deer nice and healthy during the drought.  They seem to really enjoy the tender tops of tomato plants.  Oh yeah, and I didn't get a single pepper thanks to the way the deer kept them trimmed down to about an inch high.  >:(  GRRRR!

Don't know what I'm going to try to keep them away from this years garden.

Servo, your post reminds me that I need to get that recipe for tomato preserves from you. ;)   Like the soup commercial says....MMMMmmmmmm  MMMMmmmm GOOOOOD!!!!

Storm season this spring is going to be very active. I am going to Tx to chase with my Good friend Met Jim Bishop. He works for Dynegy Inc. He has a Website
called www.stormgasm.com. If anyone wants to go on some serious chases let me know.

You might want to try a raised bed - no tiller action :)

We follow Square foot gardening for most things. last year was the first year for us and before the drought things went really well.

Does anyone know how early seedlings for tomatos and such should be started?

When is the best time to plant so I do not have what happened last year with the late freeze and had to plant stuff AGAIN !

Container gardening is also a great way to avoid the need to till the soil.

All the information you need about when to plant seeds is all on the back of the seed packages.  Tomatoes in general are 6-8 weeks before your last frost date.  I start mine 8 weeks before April 15th (which was last week).  This gives me time to start more seeds if the first batch fizzles out.

As far as knowing when to plant them it's just an educated guess really.  Planting dates are also on the back of the seed packets.  I've had times when I planted my garden and had to cover my plants with plastic becuase of a late frost.

it sounds like it is time to answer the children's pleas and buy Some seeds :)

I can taste that watermellon now ...... Can't believe the winter is over.... Maybe a few hiccups of winter and then onto planting and the best part in a few months FRESH homegraown veggies. Makes my stomach growl just thinking about it....

I live in a houseful of weirdos who don't like tomatoes.  Go figure.  So I think I'll stick to strawberry plants this time around, and maybe some blueberry bushes.

I guess I'll be putting out some plants this year. I'm not a huge fan of tomatos either though, but will still put some out. Peppers is what I like. I plan on putting lots of peppers out this year. I can hardly wait!

Ron,
We don't really like tomatoes either.... but I think you will be run out of the south if your garden does not include them :)

Tomatoes are good cooked in things though...

There is something about a fresh tomato in the summer.. Not my favorite but they are pretty good. Winter tomatos stink though :)

I have a stack of garden catalogs to get through this afternoon :0

I like cooked tomatos and fried green tomatos, but don't like just eating raw red tomatos. I think it's the texture that gets me. I'm pretty texture-sensitive when it comes to food.  ;D

I do like them on burgers and sandwiches though, just not by themselves. BLECH! My wife likes them with just salt on them... that's nasty to me.
